Basalite Turfstone is not a solid paver — it is an open-cell grid block. The unit is a lattice of concrete ribs with large open voids through it. The voids are filled with topsoil and seeded with grass, or filled with gravel, so the finished surface is mostly vegetation or aggregate with a concrete structure carrying the load beneath. The purpose is to support vehicle traffic on a surface that still looks and functions like lawn or gravel rather than pavement.

Primary applications are overflow parking, fire lanes and emergency vehicle access routes, driveway aprons and wheel strips, boat ramps, erosion control on slopes and swales, and any area required to remain green while carrying occasional vehicle loads. Fire lane access is a common requirement on commercial and multifamily projects where a code-mandated route must remain drivable without appearing as a paved road.

Because the surface is largely open, water infiltrates directly rather than running off, which can help satisfy municipal stormwater and impervious-coverage requirements. Grass-filled installations need irrigation and periodic maintenance to stay established, while gravel fill is the lower-maintenance alternative where appearance matters less.
